Paterson, NJ (January 2, 2026) – New Jersey State Police are investigating a serious multi-vehicle crash that left several people injured on Friday, January 2, on a major Passaic County highway.

According to preliminary reports, troopers responded around 3:00 a.m. to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Exit 55B in Paterson. Authorities received multiple calls reporting a collision involving several vehicles in the area.

When emergency crews arrived, they discovered multiple vehicles with heavy damage scattered across the roadway. Troopers also located approximately four occupants who suffered injuries as a result of the crash. Emergency medical personnel assessed the victims at the scene and provided immediate care.

One individual sustained critical injuries and required urgent transport to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. Officials have not released details about the nature of that person’s injuries or the current medical condition of the other victims involved.

State police temporarily closed a portion of Interstate 80 to allow responders to focus on medical treatment, investigation, and debris removal. Crews worked to clear damaged vehicles and ensure the roadway was safe before reopening the affected lanes.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the crash. Troopers confirmed the investigation remains active.

Our thoughts are with those injured, and we hope for a full recovery.

Car Accidents in New JerseySerious Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-80 near Exit 55B Results in Several Injured

Car accidents on New Jersey highways often result in serious injuries due to higher speeds and dense traffic. Interstate 80 serves as a major east-west route through New Jersey, carrying commercial vehicles, commuters, and overnight traffic. Crashes during early morning hours may involve fatigue, reduced visibility, or impaired driving.

Many car accidents lead to severe harm because drivers have less time to react at highway speeds. Multi-vehicle collisions increase the risk of injury, as occupants may experience multiple impacts within seconds.

Victims involved in serious highway crashes may suffer a wide range of injuries, including:

  • Traumatic brain injuries that affect memory, focus, or speech
  • Spinal cord and back injuries that limit movement or cause chronic pain
  • Internal injuries that require surgery or extended hospitalization
  • Broken bones and orthopedic injuries involving arms, legs, or ribs
  • Soft tissue injuries that worsen in the days following a crash

Beyond physical injuries, accident victims often face emotional stress and financial pressure. Hospital stays, rehabilitation, and missed work can disrupt daily life for victims and their families. Insurance claims following multi-vehicle crashes can also become complicated, especially when fault remains unclear.

In situations like this, many injured individuals seek guidance from an auto accident lawyer to better understand their rights. A qualified legal professional can help review crash reports, medical records, and insurance communications. Early legal support may also help preserve important evidence while investigations remain active.

Understanding legal options can help victims focus on recovery while addressing the challenges that follow a serious crash. Each case depends on specific facts, including how the collision occurred and who may be responsible.
