What to Do After a Car Accident in New JerseyOne Dead, Three Injured in Two-Car Crash on Rte 1 at Gill Ln

After a crash, you should:

  • Seek immediate medical attention, even if injuries do not appear severe at first.
  • Ensure the accident is properly reported to law enforcement.
  • Document the scene, if safely possible, including vehicle damage and road conditions.
  • Obtain contact information from witnesses and other drivers.
  • Notify their insurance provider promptly.

A motor vehicle accident can leave you and your family facing overwhelming physical, emotional, and financial challenges. There are important and necessary steps you can take after an accident to protect both your health and legal rights.

New Jersey follows a no-fault insurance system, meaning injured parties typically turn to their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage for medical expenses first. However, in cases involving severe injury or fatality, victims or surviving family members may have grounds to pursue additional compensation through a liability claim against the at-fault driver.

Depending on the circumstances, compensation may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other accident-related damages. When a fatality occurs, surviving family members may also have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under New Jersey law.

Because car accident claims are subject to strict legal deadlines and insurance requirements, obtaining experienced legal guidance as early as possible can be essential. A wrongful death attorney can help determine eligibility, gather evidence, and ensure that all claims are filed in compliance with state law.
