Toms River, NJ – Driver Charged in Deadly Hit-&-Run on Rte 37
Toms River, NJ (May 25, 2025) – A teenage driver was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that took place in Toms River on Saturday, May 24. The deadly crash took place on Route 37 just west of the Thomas A. Mathis Bridge late that night at around 7:30 p.m. It was later revealed that 18-year-old Abel Mathukutty was driving an Infiniti sedan when he crashed into the driver’s side of a Mercedes sedan.
The Mercedes crashed into a nearby pole after the impact. Mathukutty fled the scene, continuing over the bridge into Seaside Heights. The female driver of the Mercedes and male passenger were both seriously injured and taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River by ambulance. The driver later succumbed to her injuries. The male passenger was later transferred to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune in critical condition. Authorities were able to locate Mathukutty after pulling over his Infiniti at around 8 p.m. He is currently facing charges related to the crash. An ongoing investigation into the deadly accident is being managed by local law enforcement officials.
