What Should I Do If My Child Was Injured in a Scooter Crash in Newark, NJ?
If your child was injured in a scooter crash in Newark, get medical care, report the collision to police, and write down what you know about what happened. These early steps can help protect your child’s health and create a clear record of the crash.
After the first few days, watch your child closely. Children do not always describe pain clearly. A change in sleep, mood, appetite, or behavior can point to an injury that was missed. Tell the doctor about anything new you notice.
When a car hits a child on a scooter, Personal Injury Protection may pay the early medical bills. This coverage, called PIP, can come from the auto policy of a family member living in your child’s household.
As a minor, your child cannot file a legal claim alone. A parent or guardian brings the claim on the child’s behalf. The claim still belongs to your child, and the adult makes the decisions the case requires.
Once the claim moves forward, your child may recover compensation for medical bills, future treatment, pain and suffering, and any lasting effect on daily activities. As a parent, you may also recover what you paid for your child’s care.
While most injury claims in New Jersey must be filed within two years, the clock works differently for children. A child generally has until two years after turning 18 to file. Acting sooner helps preserve evidence.
Because the injured rider is a minor, special rules may apply to the claim. A Newark personal injury lawyer can explain those rules, review the insurance involved, and address disputes with the insurer while you care for your child.
