3 Killed After Semi Hits Parked SUV on NJ Turnpike Near MP 64.6

East Windsor, NJ (December 8, 2025) – Three people were killed on Sunday, December 7, at around 1:30 p.m. after a tractor-trailer collided with an SUV that was parked on the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike, near milepost 64.6.

Preliminary details indicate that a GMC SUV, driven earlier by a 44-year-old Bloomfield resident, was stopped on the right shoulder of the Turnpike. The driver was standing outside the vehicle while three passengers remained inside. A Peterbilt tractor-trailer, driven by a 33-year-old man from Philadelphia, then struck the rear of the parked SUV.

The impact was severe and resulted in the deaths of the driver who had exited the SUV, a front-seat adult passenger, and one of the two juvenile passengers seated in the back. The tractor-trailer driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Information regarding the condition of the second juvenile passenger has not yet been released.

The New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what may have led the tractor-trailer to drift onto the shoulder. Additional details will be released as the investigation progresses.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families during this challenging time.

Fatal Crashes on the New Jersey Turnpike

High-speed corridors like the3 Killed When Semi Strikes Parked SUV on Turnpike New Jersey Turnpike are especially vulnerable to severe and fatal collisions. Heavy commercial traffic, narrow shoulders, and limited reaction time can quickly turn a minor hazard into a catastrophic crash.

Some of the most common contributing factors in fatal Turnpike crashes include:

  • Driver Inattention: Even a momentary lapse of focus can cause a driver to veer into a shoulder or fail to notice stopped vehicles ahead. Distractions such as mobile phones, navigation screens, or fatigue often play a major role.
  • High Speeds: Tractor-trailers and other large vehicles travel at highway speeds that significantly increase stopping distance and crash severity. A vehicle parked on the shoulder is especially vulnerable.
  • Weather and Visibility Issues: Fog, rain, snow, and sun glare frequently reduce visibility on New Jersey highways, increasing the risk of unintended lane departures or missed hazards.
  • Mechanical Failures: Tire blowouts, brake failures, and steering issues can suddenly push a vehicle out of its lane and into stopped traffic.
  • Shoulder-Related Risks: Even when legally stopped, vehicles on the shoulder face elevated danger from drifting drivers or sudden swerves by passing traffic.

Because fatal crashes often involve multiple factors and multiple parties, investigations tend to be complex and require careful review of physical evidence, driver statements, commercial vehicle logs, and roadway conditions.

Families who lose loved ones in highway collisions often face overwhelming medical costs, funeral expenses, and profound emotional suffering. Under New Jersey law, they may be entitled to pursue compensation if another party’s negligence contributed to the crash.

A wrongful death attorney can help by identifying potentially responsible parties, handling all insurance communications, and pursuing claims for funeral costs, lost income, and emotional damages. Legal guidance helps families navigate this difficult time and ensures they are not left to manage the aftermath alone.
