17-Year-Old Killed in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on Bloomfield Ave in Newark, NJ
Newark, NJ (August 17, 2026) – A 17-year-old Newark teenager lost her life on Sunday night, August 16, after being struck by a speeding vehicle whose driver fled the scene.
Officers with the Newark Police Department and emergency medical services responded to the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Mount Prospect Avenue at approximately 8:52 p.m. following reports of a severe pedestrian crash.
Police reports and video surveillance show that a gray sedan was traveling eastbound on Bloomfield Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck the pedestrian. An unmarked Newark police vehicle traveling westbound had observed the vehicle speeding moments prior and made a U-turn shortly before the collision occurred.
Law enforcement later located and arrested the driver. Authorities charged him with second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, and third-degree endangering an injured victim.
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the teen who lost her life during this painful time.
How Does Uninsured Motorist Coverage Protect Families in Hit-and-Run Fatalities in Newark, NJ?
Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage protects families in New Jersey hit-and-run fatalities by treating the unidentified fleeing driver as an uninsured motorist, allowing surviving relatives to recover wrongful death and survivor benefits directly through the deceased victim’s own auto policy or a resident family member’s policy.
All standard personal automobile insurance policies issued in New Jersey are statutorily required to include Uninsured Motorist coverage. When a driver unlawfully flees the scene of a fatal crash and cannot be identified, the law classifies the unknown operator as an uninsured motorist.
In these criminal hit-and-run scenarios, UM coverage steps into the shoes of the missing driver’s insurance company, providing a legal mechanism for the victim’s family to pursue first-party financial recovery up to the policy’s chosen limits.
Filing a UM wrongful death and survivor claim allows eligible family members to seek financial recovery for economic and non-economic losses resulting from the fatal collision. Compensable damages include pre-death emergency medical care, funeral and burial expenses, loss of anticipated future financial support, loss of household services, and loss of parental or spousal companionship.
Navigating a hit-and-run fatality claim involves auditing all household auto policies, demonstrating that reasonable efforts were made to identify the fleeing vehicle, and satisfying strict policy reporting deadlines.
Experienced wrongful death attorneys assist grieving families by evaluating all available household policies, coordinating with law enforcement investigators, and negotiating assertively with insurance adjusters to secure full financial justice under New Jersey law.
