Toms River, NJ – Child Hospitalized after Head-On Crash on Route 70
Toms River, NJ (March 24, 2023) – The Toms River Police Department responded to the scene of an automobile accident that took place on Friday, March 24.
According to officials, 33-year-old Charles Sharkey Jr. was driving a 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck on Route 70. For unknown reasons, he ran a red light at the intersection with Massachusetts Avenue and crashed into a 2017 Subaru Impreza.
The impact of the collision sent the Impreza backward, causing it to spin around. The pickup truck then overturned and struck a 2021 Lexus RX350 before catching on fire. The truck came to rest on the driver’s side.
The driver of the Subaru and three children in the vehicle were all injured. The man and to have the children receive medical care and were released. The third child, who has not been identified, was left severely injured and hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigations determined that Sharkey was driving erratically and using a cell phone while operating his vehicle. He also had a suspended license at the time of the crash. Sharkey was also found to have two active warrants for his arrest.
The police department is currently investigating the accident.
