Summit, NJ – Teen Injured in Pedestrian Crash on Maple St near Broad St

Summit, NJ (March 16, 2023) – A 14-year-old was left with injuries following a pedestrian accident that took place in the summit area on Wednesday evening, March 15.

Reports from the police department show that at around 5:00 p.m., a 14-year-old boy from Summit, New Jersey, is attempting to cross Maple Street at the intersection of Broad Street. For reasons that have not yet been determined, the teen was struck by a vehicle.

The teen suffered injuries in the crash. He was treated at the scene by the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad. He was then transported to Overlook Medical Center for further care.

The driver of the sedan, a 41-year-old woman, reported that she was attempting to turn left from Broad Street onto Maple Street at the time of the accident. Police believe that the sun’s glare played a role in the accident.

No other injuries were reported. The woman was given a police summons for the failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian who was traveling within a crosswalk.

The Summit Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau is currently investigating the accident.

We hope the teen injured in this crash recovers quickly.

Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey

Pedestrian accidents take place every day in New Jersey. Given the frequency and severity of these accidents, the state of New Jersey currently ranks 19th as the worst state for pedestrian traffic. This is based on the fact that 870 people lost their lives between 2016 and 2020, which is considerably higher than in most other states.

Not only does New Jersey see a significant number of pedestrians die as a result of accidents every year, but we also see many people left with serious injuries as a result of these crashes.

In the majority of cases, pedestrians are hurt in accidents that are caused by the negligent and careless actions of motorists. Failure to yield continues to be one of the highest causes of these accidents here in New Jersey.

In New Jersey, pedestrians have the right-of-way to cross in designated crossing areas. Motorists are required to stop for them under most circumstances. Unfortunately, when a driver fails to stop for a pedestrian, they can crash into them and cause serious injuries.

These accidents can often be attributed to inclement weather conditions. When the vision of a driver is impaired, they may not be able to see a pedestrian who is crossing the roadway. In addition, when drivers turn at intersections, they are likely not to see pedestrians who have the right of way.
