Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey
Between 2016 in 2020, the state of New Jersey ranked as the 19th worst state in the country for pedestrians. This number was based on the high number of pedestrian fatalities reported across the state. Every year, hundreds of pedestrians die as a result of accidents that take place right here in New Jersey. In fact, pedestrian fatalities account for approximately one-third of all total fatalities in our state annually. In addition to having a high rate of fatal accidents reported, we see thousands of pedestrians left with serious injuries as a result of accidents every year in our state.
New Jersey has strict laws in place to protect pedestrians who are traveling along our roadways. However, we continue to see innocent people suffer serious injuries as a result of drivers who disobey the law and engage in reckless actions. Some common causes of pedestrian accidents that are reported in our state include:
- Speeding motorists
- Drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians
- Distracted drivers who do not see pedestrians until it is too late
- Drowsy drivers who drift off roadways and strike pedestrians
- Defective brakes that prevent drivers from stopping in time to avoid striking pedestrians
When drivers are not responsible and considerate while traveling on our roadways, they can cause severe harm to other people nearby. Unfortunately, pedestrians are more likely to suffer significant injuries due to the fact that they do not have any protection. If you have suffered injuries as a result of the pedestrian accident, it is important that you exercise your legal rights and get justice. A Newark pedestrian accident lawyer can help you hold the negligent driver accountable.
